Structural and decorative brickwork

The skills required to repair historic brickwork differ greatly from those expected of modern bricklayers. We have the ability to remedy defects and failures to historic brickwork using traditional techniques and materials, and to carry out structural repairs. We also repair plain and decorative terracotta and faience elements.

Tile and mosaic conservation and reinstatement

From light cleaning and the application of protective finishes, or individual tile and tesserae replacement we have a sympathetic approach to the care and repair of these beautiful and intricate details. Occasionally significant structural failures require large areas of tile to be reinstated, this we can do to a very high standard maintaining the integrity of the original design.

Plasterwork

Specialising in the conservation of historic plasters and renders we aim to retain as much of the original fabric as possible. We have worked on a number of projects; finding solutions to structural issues with lath and plaster walls and ceilings; conserving decorative plasterwork; and consolidating existing historic renders.

Earth buildings and mortars

Often overlooked and neglected, earth buildings or ‘clom’ as they are known in west Wales can be given the care and attention they require by our team. As well as this, we have much experience in the analysis, specification and use of earth mortars in building.

Lime coatings, and surface finishes

The first line of defence against the elements, and wear and tear, the correct application of protective finishes is vital to the longevity and function of your building or object. We regularly recommend the use of limewashes on your buildings and often rely on our expertly applied lime sheltercoats to protect specific masonry elements. We also have in depth knowledge of oils, waxes and other sympathetic coatings that may be appropriate for specific materials.

Consultancy

We offer a broad consultancy service, helping you make the right decisions for your project, including-

  • Analysis of historic materials and their deterioration and failure
  • Design and trial of new materials and techniques for use in repair specifications.
  • Provide reports and surveys to assist and inform listed building consent and faculty applications.
  • Developing a conservation management and/or maintenance plan to guide your approach going forward.

Training

One of the biggest problems facing our built heritage is our ability to disseminate the necessary skills and knowledge to maintain our homes, churches, and other beloved buildings. Whether it be students, practitioners, professionals, or homeowners we have the passion and patience to pass on our years of experience and understanding of our craft.
